Aliya Dowlut
Like all Shift Clinicians, Aliya is trained in the ShiftGrit protocol- a structured therapy program that uses counter-conditioning and evidence-based techniques to establish new perspectives. This creates better, automatic responses for our clients- things like less reactivity, stronger boundaries, healthy assertiveness, smoother communication, improved mood-optimized performance... and many more...
What do you do at Shift?
I am a Registered Provisional Psychologist with the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP), a Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), and a member of the Ontario Association of Mental Health Professionals (OAMHP).
What are your academic credentials?
I have a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University and a Bachelor of Arts Honours in Psychology from York University. I am currently completing a clinical psychology post-bac program at Fielding Graduate University.
Why did you decide to become a therapist?
The decision to pursue a career in psychology was a decision I made from a young age. I've always been interested in how our minds work, interactions, and overall well-being. I wanted to utilize my expertise to support individuals who may be experiencing difficulties and be a part of their journey of improvement.
What do you bring to your therapy sessions, and what are some goals?
My approach is empathetic, non-judgmental, and understanding of where each individual is in their life. I am focused on the client’s needs; therefore, my style is individualized. This therapeutic setting allows individuals to proceed at their own pace through a strength-based approach to reach their goals and feel a higher level of satisfaction within themselves and their lives. I also work from a culturally sensitive approach and believe that awareness is key to understanding.
Who do you work with?
I work with adolescents (16+) and adults of all backgrounds to explore and improve their quality of life.
What do you do in your spare time?
I enjoy spending time with my family and friends in my spare time. I love to travel, explore different cultures and try new restaurants. I also prioritize working out for both my mental and physical health.
What is a skill that you are currently working on?
Presently, I am engaged in increasing my knowledge of psychotherapy by pursuing ongoing education in several therapeutic approaches, such as Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Prolonged Exposure Therapy.
What motivates or inspires you?
I am deeply motivated by having the ability to impact an individual’s journey and seeing them pursue a change which positively affects their lives. The work I do holds significant value for me.
