Fees and Funding
The cost of therapy, and how to pay for it.
Your fee is set by your therapist’s provider tier. What your benefits plan can pay back depends on their professional designation. Here is how both work, in plain terms.
Two things decide what you pay.
They are separate, and it helps to keep them separate. One sets the price. The other decides what your insurance can do with it.
Sets your session fee.
Every ShiftGrit therapist is trained in the ShiftGrit Core Method™. Their tier reflects how much experience they have delivering it. Premium, Standard or Reduced-rate.
Decides what your plan can pay back.
Benefits plans look at your therapist’s designation, such as Registered Psychologist or Registered Social Worker. It decides whether your plan can reimburse the session and whether we can bill your insurer directly.
The two are independent. A Registered Provisional Psychologist can be a Premium Provider, and a Registered Psychologist can be a Standard Provider. Tier never changes what your insurance looks at.
Session fees
Our provider tiers.
Each therapist has one fee for individual sessions. You see it before you book, and it is the same for your first session and every one after.
Premium Provider
Our clinicians with the most experience delivering the ShiftGrit Core Method™.
Standard Provider
Regulated clinicians, ShiftGrit Certified, who deliver the ShiftGrit Core Method™ in every session.
Reduced-rate Provider
Clinicians earlier in their careers or practising under supervision, at a fixed, lower fee.
Intern Therapists: $75 per session. Post-practicum, supervised by a senior Registered Psychologist. None are booking right now; more are joining soon.
Every tier is ShiftGrit Certified.
Each therapist completes ShiftGrit Academy training in the ShiftGrit Core Method™ on top of their own professional training. What certification means
A Double Intensive is always twice your therapist’s individual session fee.
Insurance
Designations and your benefits plan.
Your therapist’s designation is on their profile. This is what each one means for insurance.
| Designation | Regulated by | Can we bill your insurer directly? |
|---|---|---|
| Registered Psychologist | College of Alberta Psychologists | Yes, with the insurers your clinician is enrolled with. |
| Registered Provisional Psychologist | College of Alberta Psychologists, practising under the supervision of a Registered Psychologist | Yes, with the insurers your clinician is enrolled with. |
| Registered Social Worker | Alberta College of Social Workers | Yes, with the insurers your clinician is enrolled with. |
| Canadian Certified Counsellor | Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (national certification) | Green Shield only, where your clinician is enrolled. |
| Mental Health Therapist | Practises under supervision | No. We cannot submit claims for this service. Any reimbursement is between you and your plan. |
| Intern Therapist | Supervised by a senior Registered Psychologist | No. We cannot submit claims for this service. Any reimbursement is between you and your plan. |
The 30-second call that answers it.
Only your insurer knows what your plan pays. Call the number on your card and ask:
“Does my policy cover services personally delivered by a [your therapist’s designation]? Can that provider submit electronically and receive assigned payment?”
Direct billing
Insurers we can bill directly.
Direct billing means we send your claim to your insurer at your appointment, so on the day you pay only what your plan does not pay.
Every insurer below has at least one of our clinicians we can submit a claim to. How much of the team that is varies a great deal, so the list is grouped by it. Seeing your insurer here does not mean your plan pays for therapy, and it does not mean a claim will be approved.
Most of our clinicians can submit to 6 insurers
Some of our clinicians can submit to 28 insurers
Only a few of our clinicians can submit to 3 insurers
Only one of our clinicians can submit to 1 insurer
Who can submit depends on the clinician. Each clinician enrols with insurers separately, so the clinicians we can submit to your insurer for may be in Calgary, in Edmonton, or seeing clients virtually. Get matched shows the insurers we can submit to for each clinician, or ask our team which of our clinicians can submit to yours.
Plans that pay you, not us
For Canadian Construction Workers Union (CCWU), LiUNA Local 183 and LiUNA Local 506 plans, we can submit your claim, but these plans send any payment to you, not to us, so you pay us the full session fee.
If your insurer is not listed
You can still see us. You pay at the appointment and submit the receipt to your insurer yourself. Some programs, such as WCB Alberta, need an arrangement in place before a claim can be submitted, so give us a call if one of those applies to you.
Direct billing is a convenience, not a guarantee. Your plan decides what it pays, and you are responsible for any amount it does not. Whether your plan covers therapy, how much it covers and how many sessions are questions only your provider can answer. More on direct billing
Other ways to fund your sessions
Health Spending Accounts
Claim with your receipt, as you would any health expense.
Employee and Family Assistance Programs
Ask your EFAP whether it will fund sessions with an outside clinician.
Government programs and sponsors
Including WCB Alberta and NIHB. Call us first so the arrangement is in place.
Paying
How payment works.
Paid in full when you book online.
You pay the session fee only, with no card processing fee. After the session we send you a receipt through Jane to claim back from your insurer yourself, even if we direct bill your plan later.
Jane emails your intake forms as soon as you book. Please complete them before your first session.
Live outside Alberta? Talk to our team about virtual options before you book.
Charged at the start of the session.
Your card stays on file in Jane. Where direct billing is set up, we submit your claim at the appointment and you pay only the remainder.
We don’t offer prepayment for future sessions.
Credit card payments carry a processing fee of 2.4%. Paying by debit in person avoids it.
Important Payment Update: Effective January 1, 2027, ShiftGrit will no longer accept e-transfer payments. Debit payments made in person remain free of processing fees. All payments through Jane App and credit card payments made in person will continue to be subject to the existing 2.4% processing fee. Thank you for your understanding!
48 hrs
Cancellation policy
Your clinician schedules and devotes their time to you alone, which necessitates the following policy: missed appointments, or those cancelled with less than 48 hours notice, are subject to the full fee of a regular appointment. In order to ensure you receive the best possible results from your therapy session, late arrivals 20 minutes past the session start time are considered a missed appointment. As such, no service will take place and the missed appointment fees will apply. Please note that missed appointment fees are not billable to insurance.
