What is your name/nickname?

Hello, my name is Anchal Kanwar and I am a registered provisional psychologist in Edmonton, AB.

What do you do at Shift?

I offer a safe space for individual therapy sessions for children (age 12+), adolescents, and adults to explore and understand their mental health concerns. I work from a client-centred and strength-based approach to meet my clients where they are and ensure that the work we do together is both meaningful and transformative.

What are your academic credentials?

I received my Master's degree in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University of Los Angeles with an emphasis on psychological trauma, addiction and recovery, as well as pediatric development across a lifespan. I have been working in the field for over 5 years and have experience working with clients of all ages.

Why did you decide to become a therapist?

I have always been driven by my passion for helping others. From an early age, I knew that I wanted to pursue a career that would allow me to make a positive impact on people’s lives, and becoming a psychologist has been the perfect way to do just that.

I was drawn to the field of psychology because I have always been fascinated by the way the human mind works, and I wanted to use this knowledge to help people struggling with their mental health. I knew that therapy could be a powerful tool for helping individuals overcome challenges and improve their lives, and I wanted to be a part of that process.

What do you bring to your therapy sessions, and what are some goals?

There is no cookie-cutter or “one size fits all” approach when it comes to therapy. As such, I often pull from different schools of psychology to form an integrated approach that is unique to each client and fits their personal needs.

In therapy, my goal is to create a safe and supportive environment in which my clients can explore their thoughts and feelings without judgement and work towards achieving their personal, professional, and lifelong goals.

I know that therapy can be challenging, including the decision to start. Acknowledging that you have a challenge you are willing to work at is a strength and I am here to recognize that with you.

Who do you work with?

I help children (age 12+), adolescents, and adults of all backgrounds explore and improve their quality of life.

Why are you passionate about what you do?

Over the years, I have seen firsthand the transformative power of therapy. I have worked with clients from all walks of life, and I have seen them make incredible progress as they learn to navigate their emotions, build resilience, and create meaningful connections with others.

For me, being a psychologist was a deeply personal and meaningful decision. I feel privileged to be able to support individuals during some of the most difficult moments of their lives and to help them achieve their goals for personal growth and development. As humans, we all require connection, support, and guidance at some point in our lives, and it is an honour to be able to provide that for my clients.

What do you do in your spare time?

During my spare time, I prioritize spending quality time with my loved ones, whether that means hanging out with my family or catching up with friends. I have a passion for travelling and enjoy experiencing new cultures and customs around the world with my loved ones. When I'm not able to travel, I channel my creativity into the kitchen and experiment with new recipes, using different ingredients and cuisines to create healthy and delicious meals.

Maintaining my physical health is important to me, so I often engage in outdoor activities like hiking or cycling or head to the gym for a workout. And of course, I love to unwind at the end of the day by watching my favourite TV shows or movies and spending some quality time cuddling up with my furry best friend.

What is a skill that you are currently working on?

As a therapist, I am constantly striving to improve my skills and provide the best possible care to my clients. One area that I am currently working on is meeting my clients where they are in their journey. This means that I am focused on truly understanding their unique experiences, perspectives, and needs, and tailoring my approach accordingly.

I believe that this skill is essential in creating a safe and supportive therapeutic environment, where my clients feel heard, understood, and empowered. It requires a deep level of empathy, active listening, and an openness to different viewpoints.

By honing this skill, I am better able to connect with my clients and build a strong therapeutic alliance, which is the foundation of successful therapy. It also allows me to create individualized treatment plans that are tailored to each client's specific goals and needs.

What motivates or inspires you?

What motivates and inspires me is the chance to make a positive impact on the lives of others. As a psychologist, I have the privilege of helping individuals navigate some of the most difficult moments of their lives, and it is incredibly fulfilling to witness their growth and progress. Whether it's helping a client work through past traumas, develop healthy coping mechanisms, or improve their relationships with others, I find great meaning in the work that I do.

I am also inspired by the resilience and strength of the human spirit. Seeing my clients overcome adversity and rise above their circumstances is a constant source of inspiration for me. It reminds me of the power of hope and determination and reinforces my belief in the potential for positive change in every person's life.
