About Me as a Human…
When I am not in therapy-land, you can find me:
Breaking a sweat at the gym or hitting the trails for a run, always chasing that endorphin rush. At home, I’m either curled up with a good book, unwinding, or making memories with my family. On any given day, you might also find me at a cozy café, savouring a sweet treat.
For Self-Care:
It's all about nurturing my mind and body—whether staying committed to my workouts, savouring the stillness in quiet moments, or letting music calm me. It’s all about balancing work and life and making time for what matters.
For Fun:
I like diving into new hobbies, tasting new foods, and winding down with reality TV or a good basketball game.
For Growth:
I set small goals to boost my confidence, practice mindfulness to stay in tune with myself, and explore new workouts like yoga or strength training. I read and take online courses to grow my knowledge, and I take time to reflect on my thoughts and share my feelings with loved ones.
Something unique about me is:
My passion for cultural competence, especially in therapy. As someone who lives in Canada and is originally from the Philippines, I deeply value understanding and respecting different cultural backgrounds. This allows me to connect with others on a meaningful level and offer a more inclusive, empathetic approach to my work.
What are your academic credentials?
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Alberta and a Master of Science in Clinical Psychology with a specialization in Forensic Psychology from Capella University (2023). Additionally, I have completed advanced coursework in addictions and mental health at Mount Royal University.
Before I Was in the Mental Health Field…
I was working in:
I gained valuable experience working in client care recovery within a detox setting, as well as volunteering with various mental health organizations. My initial interest was in the intersection of psychology and the law, but these experiences allowed me to nurture my passion for psychology while supporting individuals in their recovery. Through this work, I developed a deeper understanding of mental health services and the essential role that compassionate care plays in fostering healing and growth.
The most impactful thing about my experience here was:
Engaging with diverse populations and witnessing the profound transformations that unfold when individuals are given the right support. Seeing people navigate challenges and make meaningful changes in their lives was truly inspiring, and it reinforced my belief in the importance of compassion and understanding in fostering growth and healing.
Three Things I’m Currently Obsessed With and Why:
- Running: I’ve been training consistently, and it’s become a huge part of my routine. Not only has it improved my physical health, but it’s also a great way to clear my mind and relieve stress, especially after a long day. It’s my go-to for resetting both my body and mind.
- Coffee: The one thing I’ll never get tired of. I’m always on the lookout for the perfect brew!
- Journaling: Always reflecting and unwinding at my own pace.
Books & Podcasts
The Most Helpful Book I’ve Read Is:
Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking by by Susan Cain
Biggest Takeaway: As an introverted, quieter soul, I’ve always found it challenging to navigate a world that seems to celebrate extroversion. This book helped me see my introspective nature as a strength, teaching me to embrace my quieter qualities and use them to my advantage.
The Most Interesting Book I’ve Read Is:
Crazy: Notes On And Off The Couch by Rob Dobrenski
Why: provides a captivating insight into how a mental health professional grapples with both his personal struggles and his experiences within the field.
