Jessica van Mill
Like all Shift Therapists, Jessica is trained in the ShiftGrit program- a structured therapy program that uses counter-conditioning and evidence-based techniques to establish new perspectives. This creates better, automatic responses for our clients- things like less reactivity, stronger boundaries, healthy assertiveness, smoother communication, improved mood-optimized performance... and many more...
What is your name?
Hey there, my name is Jessica and I prefer to be called Jess
What do you do at Shift?
I provide both individual and couples therapy. For individual therapy, I blend the wisdom of the Shift protocol, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) with a dash of solution-focused therapy to help you thrive. When it comes to couples, I combine the insights of the Gottman method with DBT and solution-focused theories. By mixing all these approaches in my therapy, I aim to empower individuals and couples to develop new skills and create a truly fulfilling life.
What are your academic credentials?
I earned my Masters in Counseling Psychology from City University of Seattle and completed my Bachelor of Arts with a major in Psychology at Athabasca University.
I am a member of the Psychological Association of Alberta (PAA), Canadian Counselling and Psychological Association (CCPA), Canadian Psychological Association (CPA), College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP) and Alberta Society for the Promotion of Sexual Health (ASPSH).
Why did you decide to become a therapist?
I discovered my calling as a therapist through numerous conversations with midlife women who were navigating both their sexual health and the uncertainties of life's middle stages such as children leaving home, new and old relationships, and becoming a caregiver to their elders. These talks have revealed to me the profound impact of having supportive guidance and understanding during these pivotal life transitions.
Moreover, I derive immense fulfillment from empowering individuals to not only embrace change but to deeply understand their personal journey. Together, we explore aspirations, fears, and dreams, forging a path towards fulfillment and renewed purpose rather than their past. Witnessing their growth and resilience inspires me every day to continue fostering positive change and genuine empowerment in clients' lives.
What do you bring to your therapy sessions, and what are some goals?
I cultivate a down-to-earth atmosphere infused with a supportive, open, and lighthearted approach that sets a relaxed and welcoming environment. Drawing from a wealth of experience and knowledge, I have guided individuals through a diverse range of challenges including emotional regulation, suicide prevention, trauma recovery, anxiety, depression, ADHD, sexual health concerns, intimacy challenges, and relationship issues to name a few.
My goal is to create a safe space where we can navigate these complexities together, fostering growth, healing, and personal empowerment. Together, let's explore your journey with a mix of empathy, positivity, and maybe even a sprinkle of humour!
Who do you work with?
My expertise and passion centre around supporting midlife women and addressing concerns related to pelvic floor health, intimacy, life transitions, and sexual wellness. I also focus on individuals aged 18 and older who are wanting to make positive changes and are prepared to embrace them. I also offer couples therapy for those navigating relationship challenges together.
Why are you passionate about what you do?
I find deep fulfillment in my work as a therapist because there's nothing quite as rewarding as assisting individuals who feel overwhelmed by life's whirlwinds. It brings me immense joy to guide clients through the process of turning off the chaotic blender of their emotions, thoughts, and challenges. Together, we gather all the scattered pieces and carefully put them together, creating a stronger and more resilient self. Witnessing my clients regain their balance and rediscover their inner strength is a privilege and a source of constant inspiration for me.
What do you do in your spare time?
Outside of the office, you'll often find me immersed in family life on our farm, caring for our array of animals, bush camping and the adventures of quading and hunting. Prior to family life and injuries I was an active soccer player. While my recent focus has been on schooling, I eagerly anticipate diving back into the pleasure of reading for enjoyment.
In my downtime, I also indulge in diamond art which has became a soothing mental escape as I lose myself in the intricate patterns. I am also what is called an eco-adventurer and when able, I like to find unique things to do when travelling. I believe in living a well-rounded life filled with creativity, connection and enjoying things that are off the beaten path.
I bring this same spirit of curiosity and passion for life into our therapy sessions, fostering an environment where exploration, growth, and personal connection flourish.
What is a skill that you are currently working on?
I'm currently deep into preparations for my EPPP as I work towards achieving my goal of becoming a Registered Psychologist. Alongside this, I'm dedicating time to refreshing and enhancing my skills in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and the Shift protocol. As I look forward, I'm eagerly anticipating the training I have scheduled for this fall in Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART). These opportunities for professional growth not only expand my toolkit but also strengthen my ability to provide effective and compassionate care to my clients.
What motivates or inspires you?
In my earlier years, I faced a variety of challenges that fuelled a deep-seated determination to constantly strive for personal growth and development. This drive ignited a profound passion for lifelong learning, continual exploration, and the pursuit of a fulfilling life. I believe in embracing challenges as opportunities for growth and transformation even though they can be challenging, and I am committed to guiding my clients on their own unique journeys of self-discovery and empowerment. My experiences have taught me the value of resilience, curiosity, and the importance of navigating life's twists and turns with courage and optimism. I am dedicated to fostering an environment in which my clients can cultivate their strengths, overcome obstacles, and achieve their goals, whatever they may be.
What are your additional areas of clinical interest?
I have a keen interest in expanding my clinical expertise in several areas. One of my primary goals is to become a certified sex therapist, as I am passionate about helping individuals and couples navigate intimacy and sexual health issues with sensitivity and skill.
Additionally, I am intrigued by psychological assessments and their role in understanding and supporting clients' mental health journeys. I look forward to pursuing further training in this area to enhance my ability to provide comprehensive and insightful assessments that guide effective treatment planning.
Looking ahead, I am also drawn to the idea of earning a Doctorate in Psychology. This advanced degree would not only deepen my theoretical knowledge and clinical competence but also allow me to contribute to the field through research, education, and advanced clinical practice.
Ultimately, my aim is to continuously expand my skills and knowledge base to better serve my clients and contribute positively to the field of psychology through continuous training.
