About this service

A psychoeducational assessment is designed to clarify how an individual learns, processes information, and performs academically. At ShiftGrit Calgary, we provide structured psychoeducational assessments that support informed understanding and practical planning across school, work, and daily life.

Our assessments emphasize clarity, clinical rigour, and transparency — so results are understandable, defensible, and useful. Psychoeducational assessments at our Mount Royal studio are offered for two clearly defined age groups: children/youth (learning profiles, cognitive strengths, academic skills within developmental and school contexts) and adults (learning patterns and academic or functional skills in post-secondary, vocational, or training contexts).

The result is a detailed report that documents how the brain works in the assessment context, identifies areas of strength and difficulty, and provides practical recommendations to support success — academic accommodations, learning strategies, workplace adaptations, and follow-on support as appropriate. If therapy is part of the recommended next step, our clinicians work within the Identity-Level Therapy orientation using the ShiftGrit Core Method™.

Assessments are conducted in-person at our Mount Royal studio (815 17 Avenue SW). Same-week intake consultations are typically available.

FAQ

What is a psychoeducational assessment?

A psychoeducational assessment is a comprehensive evaluation designed to understand how an individual learns, processes information, and performs academically or cognitively. It identifies strengths, challenges, and factors such as learning disabilities, ADHD, or giftedness that may affect performance.

Who should consider getting a psychoeducational assessment?

Psychoeducational assessments are helpful for children, teens, and adults who are experiencing difficulties with learning, focus, organization, or performance at school, work, or in daily life. They are also beneficial for those seeking clarity about their cognitive abilities or accommodations for specific needs.

What does the assessment process involve?

The process typically includes an initial consultation to understand concerns, a series of standardized tests to evaluate cognitive and academic abilities, and a final feedback session to discuss the results and recommendations. Testing may include written tasks, problem-solving activities, and interviews.

How long does the assessment take?

Psychoeducational assessments usually take several hours, spread across two to three sessions. This ensures a comprehensive evaluation without overwhelming the individual being assessed.

What types of challenges can the assessment identify?

The assessment can identify learning disabilities (e.g., dyslexia or dyscalculia), ADHD, executive functioning difficulties, emotional factors affecting learning, and other conditions that may impact academic or workplace performance.

What happens after the assessment?

You will receive a detailed report outlining the findings, including strengths, areas of difficulty, and tailored recommendations. This report can be used to implement strategies, seek accommodations, or guide therapeutic or educational interventions.

Can the assessment help with school or workplace accommodations?

Yes, psychoeducational assessments provide the documentation required to apply for academic accommodations, workplace adjustments, or support through standardized testing programs.

Is the assessment covered by insurance?

Coverage depends on your specific insurance plan. Many extended health benefit plans cover psychological assessments. We recommend checking with your provider to confirm what is included.

At what age can someone undergo a psychoeducational assessment?

Psychoeducational assessments are suitable for individuals of all ages, from young children to adults. The testing and recommendations are tailored to the specific needs and stage of life of the individual.
