What is your name/nicknames?
My name is Paul Ojomu. My graduate school classmates love calling me “Positive Paul.”
What do you do at Shift?
I am a clinician (Registered Provisional Psychologist) at ShiftGrit, offering individual therapy sessions for adults and adolescents. I love to see individuals fulfill their goals in life. My approach to psychotherapy is client-centred, helping clients discover their strengths, irrespective of their history, and charting a new course for their lives. I strongly believe in working collaboratively within a non-judgemental, existential, and culturally sensitive environment. In addition to using the SHIFT Protocol to resolve clients’ presenting concerns, I am also skilled in Solution-Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT). I am also strongly interested in other therapeutic techniques that help clients address various life issues.
What are your academic credentials?
I received my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Athabasca University, and Master of Counselling (MC) from City University of Seattle. I am currently completing my Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) in Clinical Psychology.
Why did you decide to become a therapist?
Prior to moving into the world of psychology, I spent the early part of my career in Information Technology with a Master of Science (MSc) in IT. But I realized I have more satisfaction working with people than fixing computers. I derive more joy when I assist people in coping with life’s challenges. So when the opportunity opened for me in Canada for a career change, I decided to pursue my passion. And I am so glad I did.
What do you bring to your therapy sessions, and what are some goals?
One of the biggest things I bring into therapy is my authentic warm personality and skills. In addition, I believe strongly in connecting with my clients as we work through the issues that bring them to therapy. I aim to work collaboratively within a structured therapeutic technique to address the client’s presenting concerns.
Who do you work with?
I work with diverse populations and age groups, especially adults and adolescents.
Why are you passionate about what you do?
I am so passionate about what I do because I see psychology beyond just building a career but a call for me to help humanity, a call to help people reach their goals and maximize their potential.
What do you do in your spare time?
I enjoy playing musical instruments (I play about three musical instruments) and outdoor sports. I also love to spend time with my family.
What is a skill that you are currently working on?
I am currently working on developing my research skills in the area of human behavior, culture, and technology.
What motivates or inspires you?
Fulfillment of purpose is one of my greatest motivators in life.
